Can you shower with gold-coloured stainless steel jewellery?
Gold-tone stainless steel jewellery gets its colour from a coating applied over the steel. The two methods you'll come across most often are electroplating and PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition).
Electroplating uses an electrochemical process to bond a fine layer of gold onto the surface of the steel, and it's been the standard method in jewellery-making for decades — including in plenty of fine jewellery. PVD applies the coating in a vacuum chamber, which tends to bond very tightly to the surface. Both are legitimate, well-established finishes. Neither one is automatically "the good one" — what actually decides how a gold-tone piece holds up is the quality of the process behind it: how many microns of gold are applied, how many coating layers are used, and how well the base metal is prepped beforehand. Occasional showering shouldn't be a problem for well-made gold-tone stainless steel, whichever coating method was used. Repeated exposure to strong soaps, shampoo, exfoliants, chemicals, perfume, chlorine and salt water can gradually affect almost any jewellery finish over time — that's simply how coated metal behaves, not a flaw specific to one method.
What about silver-coloured stainless steel jewellery?
Silver-toned stainless steel is often the simplest option when it comes to water exposure, because its colour comes from the steel itself rather than a coating. That said, if you want to keep a favourite piece looking as fresh as possible for as long as possible, removing it before long showers is always the gentlest option. Think of it like caring for a favourite pair of shoes or a handbag — durability doesn't mean care stops mattering.
